Red Sox promote former Ivy Leaguer Mike Hazen to general manager

The Boston Red Sox promoted Mike Hazen to senior vice president and general manager Thursday. Hazen served as assistant general manager under former GM Ben Cherington.

Hazen is partly responsible for helping fill the big league roster with strong young talent and stocking the minor league system with plenty of depth. Those accomplishments made him the leading candidate to fill a job that will be subordinate to Dave Dombrowski, who was hired in August as president of baseball operations.

"Over his 10 years with the Red Sox, Mike has proven to be an invaluable member of the baseball operations department," Dombrowski said in a press release. "We are thrilled to have him in this position and I'm excited to have him working with me on every aspect of baseball operations."

The Red Sox are in last place in the American League East and seven games out of the second wild card spot. They are 72-79 entering today's game against Tampa Bay.

While Ben Cherington was the scapegoat, the depth of talent and farm system the Red Sox have could mean an exceedingly quick turnaround.

Hazen, 39, has already worked for the club for 10 years in baseball operations and adds to a youth movement around baseball when it comes to the men paid to cultivate talent. The Milwaukee Brewers hired 30-year-old David Stearns as its GM earlier this week.

Hazen is a native of Abington, Massachusetts and attended Princeton, where he became an All-Ivy League outfielder. San Diego drafted him in the 31st round in 1998. After working as a scout and in player development for the Cleveland Indians, former Boston GM Theo Epstein hired Hazen in 2006 to serve as director of player development.

Hazen interviewed for the general manager job with the Los Angeles Angels last week and previously interviewed for the same position in San Diego. He is the sixth consecutive New Englander to be hired as Boston GM, dating back to 1984 when Lou Gorman succeeded Haywood Sullivan.
